World Championship 1,500m silver medalist Jenny Simpson heads into the NYRR Fifth Avenue Mile presented by Nissan Sunday as the odds-on-favorite. Simpson, who currently ranks US#1 over the 1,500m, 3,000m and 5,000m distances on the track, is looking to finish her season off strong, especially after a tenth place 1,500m performance in the final Diamond League meet two weeks ago. However, having such success in 2013 and knowing the Fifth Avenue Mile course after winning the event in 2011, Simpson enters with all eyes on her.

Veterans Shannon Rowbury and Morgan Uceny are arguably Simpson’s greatest challengers. Rowbury, who recently announced a coaching switch to Alberto Salazar, enters Sunday’s action having finished seventh at the IAAF World Outdoor Track and Field Championships over 5,000m. Rowbury closed out her Diamond League season with a fourth place 1,500m finish in Brussels and has experience running the Fifth Avenue Mile, having won in both 2009 and 2010.

Uceny, who has had more downs than ups in 2013, is seemingly rounding back into the form that saw her rank as the best 1,500m runner in the world in 2011 and 2012. Last weekend, Uceny edged World Championship 1,500m bronze medalist Hellen Obiri for the win at the Bupa Great North 1 Mile. Uceny’s experience and success bodes well as she enters yet another road mile this weekend.

Two international runners pose a challenge to the top Americans in the field. Hannah England (Great Britain) is the top returnee from last year’s Fifth Avenue Mile, where she finished third. After finishing third at the Bupa Great North 1 Mile last weekend and fourth over 1,500m at the World Championships, she’ll be looking for the win on Sunday. Susan Kuijken (Netherlands) finished eighth at the IAAF World Outdoor Track and Field Championships over 5,000m and has the versatility to make a run at the title in New York.

One of the most consistent high-end performers in the field is Gabriele Anderson. Anderson, who ranks US#4 over 1,500m with her season best of 4:01.48, enters the race as one of the favorites and certainly has the experience to come up with the win. Fourth at the Fifth Avenue Mile in 2012, she’ll test her fitness against the talented field, hoping to take home the $5,000 first place prize.

Other notable veterans in the field include US#6 1,500m runner Katie Mackey and third place USA 1 Mile Championship finisher Heather Kampf. Kampf finished sixth in New York one year ago, while Chelsea Reilly, who’s entered Sunday, finished eighth in 2012. Reilly is running strong late in the season, having run a 5,000m personal best with her 15:10.14 Zurich Diamond League performance.
